Resistance training is extremely important in all sports. Even endurance sports like distance running, cycling, swimming and others–where resistance training has, at times been thought of as taboo–is becoming essential to progress.
Keep in mind, resistance is not just about weights. Anything that increases the effort needed to complete a normal movement of the body is consider resistance training. I am often asked, “How old do you have to be in order to start resistance training?” The answer may not be what you think: chronological age has little to do with when an athlete should start resistance training.
Some argue that even before puberty the body could benefit from resistance training. Our data shows something quite different, but that doesn’t mean resistance training should be set aside only for high school athletes. Teaching young athletes the proper form on the most basic and necessary strength exercises gives them a huge head start. Resistance training can be accomplished using almost anything as “weight.” It is the level of intensity that becomes the main question.
